Dear Diary,

I will admit that I had the thought, "I need to change some things in my life." run through my mind, but I suppose Fate decided to take that to a whole new level. My morning was…eventful. Ja, let's say that…

Ludwig's eyes opened to the sound of his front door opening. He frowned, looking at the digital clock on his nightstand. "Who the hell is here at 4:30? And why aren't the dogs barking?" he growled.

He grabbed his pistol from under his pillow, getting up. He slowly opened his door. He made his way down the stairs and he stopped at the bottom, peeking around the edge of the archway leading into the kitchen. He squinted, trying to use the light from the street light outside to see who was there. The person, a man by the looks of it, set something down in the foyer before walking into the kitchen. He walked over to the bread hutch, grabbing a piece.

Ludwig struck. He hit the man's neck with the butt of his pistol and he wrapped his other arm around the man's neck. He pointed the pistol into the man's temple.

"Ludwig! Ich bin es! Scheiße!"

Ludwig sighed and shoved the man away, turning on the kitchen light. "What are you doing here Gilbert?"

The silver haired man rubbed the back of his neck, glaring at Ludwig. "Is that how you greet all of us?"

Ludwig sighed, knowing Gilbert was referring to the rest of the family. "Nein. Just you."

Gilbert laughed. "Hahahaha! I'm the special one then, aren't I?"

Ludwig cocked his pistol and pointed it at Gilbert. Gilbert paled. "Christus! Calm down! Just hear me out!"

Ludwig grunted and set the pistol on the counter, away from his brother. Ludwig whistled and his three dogs, Berlitz, Aster, and Blackie walked in, all panting and yawning. Ludwig sighed. They need to learn that Gilbert is not that welcome here.

Gilbert leaned against the counter and took another bite of the slice of bread he took. "Look, kleiner bruder, I need help."

Ludwig's frown got bigger, narrowing his eyes in suspicion. This can't be good.

Gilbert gulped down the mouthful of bread. "I'm a little short on euros, if you know what I mean."

Ludwig sighed. I'm not giving him any money, he growled in his mind.

"Before you say you won't give me any money, listen," Gilbert's obnoxious voice cut in, "I got a job, but it's a trial run, kind of a test. I'm now an airline pilot for an airport nearby. If this gig works, I get a real job there. Only problem is, I won't be able to stay home that often."

Ludwig pinched the bridge of his nose. "Ja, ja, that's great Gilbert, what do you need then?"

"I need you to watch Monika. Just for a couple months. After the holiday's pass, I'll be able to be home more often."

Ludwig blanched. Watch Monika? For two months?! "Why me?!" Ludwig managed to choke out, "didn't you ask Maria or Laura?!"

"Ja, and ja. Neither of them could, and I'd rather have Monika with you than Roderick. I trust that you'll actually give her some attention instead of locking yourself in a room writing music all day. At least you leave your verdammt house."

Ludwig sighed. He had a point. "Why couldn't either of our Schwestern watch her?" he asked, rubbing his temples.

It was too early for Gilbert and his schrott.

"Laura has her big audition for that school in Austria in a couple weeks and Maria is getting ready to leave for Russia in a couple days."

Ludwig sighed, again. Laura was the violin prodigy of the family, while Maria was an ambassador to Russia for Deutschland. Roderick composed music for various things like commercials and movies. Meanwhile, Ludwig was a mechanic at a body shop and Gilbert hopped from job to job. And Gilbert was the only one that had something resembling a family.

A daughter.

"Fein. I'll watch her."

Gilbert brightened, standing up straighter. "Danke! Danke Ludwig! Haha! All right now, here is her Kindergarten schedule. That's about all you need to know. Make sure she eats right and all that good schrott."

Ludwig sighed, only halfway listening to his brother ramble on about what to do for Monika.

Gilbert finally walked into the foyer, looking down in the corner. "She fell asleep on us bruder."

Ludwig walked over to the opening of the foyer, looking down. The little girl was curled into a ball in the corner by the archway leading into the kitchen. She softly sighed in her sleep, twitching a little. Gilbert picked her up and pushed the hood of her heavy coat back, revealing short, blonde hair with bangs held back by a hair clip.

Gilbert kissed her forehead lovingly. "Which room?"

Ludwig pointed up the stairs. "Up the stairs, second door to the left."

Gilbert looked down at the floor of the foyer. "Can you grab her bag?"

Ludwig looked to see a suitcase about the size of the girl herself sitting by the door. He nodded and waved his bruder off, walking to go get it. The dogs were right on his heels. Ludwig grabbed the handle of the suitcase, rolling it behind him as he walked over to his back door. He let the dogs out. He pushed his bangs back from his forehead and picked up the suitcase, walking up the stairs.

He stopped outside his guest room when he heard Gilbert's voice. "Liebling, you won't be here for long. I promise to try to come back for Weihnachten."

Ludwig leaned against the wall beside the door.

"Okay Vati," a small voice answered.

He heard Gilbert kiss his daughter. "Now, you be good for Onkel Ludwig. Do as your told and…" Gilbert trailed off.

"Don't do anything you would do," the little girl finished with a small giggle.

Ludwig shrugged. That's actually a good guideline.

Gilbert leaned out of the room and saw Ludwig. He held his hand out for the suitcase and Ludwig handed it to him. Ludwig pushed his bangs back from his forehead again, trying to make them slick back.  He crossed his arms across his chest. He heard Gilbert say good night to Monika and he finally walked out, closing the door slowly.

Gilbert sighed and looked up at Ludwig. Ludwig thought he actually felt sympathy for a fleeting moment when he saw the weariness in his brother's eyes.

"You look like Scheiße," he said bluntly.

Gilbert frowned. "Well, these past six months haven't been that easy!"

Ludwig nodded. "Mir lied. Have you heard from her?"

Gilbert sighed, leaning his forearm against the wall. "Nein. Nothing since she left."

Both of the brothers stood in silence.

"So, is it official?" Ludwig finally asked.

Gilbert sighed, setting his forehead on his arm. "Ja. She left the papers on the table and gave me full custody of Monika, then poof. Gone."

Ludwig felt a little bit of sympathy for his bruder again. He put his hand on Gilbert's shoulder. "You'll get back on your feet with this, ja?

Gilbert nodded, chuckling with no humor. "Ja, then Vati might leave me alone for once."

Ludwig sighed, thinking about their intimidating father. Gilbert stood up straight. "Well, I better go. I start in a few hours and I don't want to be late!"

Gilbert walked down the stairs and Ludwig heard his front door open and close again. Then he heard Gilbert's junkie car starting and pulling out of his driveway.

Finally, silence. Ludwig thought in relief. He made his way down the stairs and let the dogs in. The golden retriever, shepherd, and puppy all came in and went back to their beds in the corner of the living room.

Ludwig looked at the clock and groaned. It was 5:15 a.m; fifteen minutes ago he would have just been waking up.

He rubbed the back of his head and walked back up to his room. He put on some pants and slicked his hair back; this time it stayed. "Looks like I have to make breakfast for two," he thought aloud.

Monika is a very good girl. Quiet, but she listens and she minds. The dogs like her. At least that's one thing I don't have to worry about. I worry about Gilbert. Ever since his wife left him for that Französisch Schwein, he's been different. He hasn't called himself awesome in months. I just hope that this will only be a one-time thing. I don't want to have to watch Monika every time Gilbert is short on money…

Ludwig cracked open another egg and put it in the skillet. He dumped some milk in as he started to stir. Soon, the eggs were fluffy and almost done. He put some cheese and some cut up sausage in too. Soon, he had the perfect mixture of scrambled egg, cheese, and sausage. The aroma brought more than the dogs in too. Ludwig heard the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs and they stopped at the entryway to the kitchen.

"You can sit down," he said, not looking over his shoulder.

He heard the scrape of the chair legs on the tile floor and a soft, plop, as Monika sat down. Ludwig looked at the time on the clock. Huh, so she's an early riser too.

He looked at her over his shoulder, finally. She was taller than when he last saw her, which might have been almost a year ago. Her blonde hair now barely fell into her eyes. Her big, blue-green eyes looked at him expectantly. She must be hungry.

That look reminded him of the looks the dogs give him when they're hungry, which was what they were doing right then. Ludwig cleared his throat and wondered, What do I say to her? Should I ask her to do something?

"Do you want me to get the plates?"

Ludwig's eyes widened in surprise. "J-ja."

He pointed at the cabinet they were in. The five year old nodded, walking over to the counter. She pulled herself up with surprising ease. Ludwig looked at her with wide eyes. She's stronger than she looks.

She opened the cabinet and set two plates on the counter beside her. She slowly crawled down and she grabbed the plates and put them on the table. She then walked over to the silverware drawer, grabbing two forks from it. Ludwig shrugged. She must have remembered from when she was last here.

Ludwig grabbed a potholder out of the drawer beside him. He tossed it onto the table, setting the skillet on it. He scooped some of the eggs out on a plate and he set it in front of her.

She didn't waste any time digging in. The corner of Ludwig's mouth almost twitched into a small grin. He put some eggs on his plate, sitting down across from her. The duo ate in silence, which didn't bother Ludwig at all. He liked how quiet she was. The dogs, except Blackie, the stupid mutt, waited patiently by their bowls, waiting for Ludwig to get up and get their food and water.

Ludwig finished his breakfast and scooped some more eggs onto his plate. He left a little bit for Monika, in case she wanted some. Monika finished her plate, looking at the skillet with wide eyes.

"You can have more," he said around a mouthful.

Monika looked at him in surprise. "I can?"

Ludwig suddenly noticed how bony her limbs looked, and how he could see her high cheek bones almost too well.

I guess they really were in trouble, he realized. "Ja, you can have as much as you want," he said.

Monika pushed her plate toward the skillet and Ludwig scooped the rest of the eggs onto it. She pulled it back and scooped a huge bite into her mouth. She acts like she hasn't eaten in months.

Ludwig didn't blame his bruder, considering it was his wife that used most of their money to buy alcohol. Ludwig hoped that Gilbert will be able to get back on his feet and take care of his daughter and, most importantly, leave him alone.

Ludwig got up and put the skillet and his plate in the sink and turned the water on. He heard the pitter patter of Monika's feet and she held the plate with the fork on it out for him to take.

"Danke," he said quietly, taking it from her.

He looked to see her peering into the other sink, having a feeling of awkwardness rise up in his chest. She hopped a few times to get a better look. Ludwig shook his head and pulled the closest chair from the table to him. He gestured to it and she climbed on. He pushed the chair closer to the other side of the big sink, setting the now clean and soapy plates in her side.

Monika moved the head of the faucet over to her side and she started to rinse the plates off. After the soap was off, she put them in the drying rack next to her side. Ludwig nodded in approval and cleaned off the skillet and wooden spoon and gave them to her.

She diligently rinsed them off and set them in the rack. Ludwig grunted in approval. She was willing to help, danken Gott. She got off the chair and pushed the chair back in its spot at the table.

Ludwig rubbed the back of his neck. "Uh, I have to feed the dogs now, want to help?"

She nodded vigorously, following Ludwig out to the big container of dog food he kept out in his garage. He shivered as the bitter winter chill hit his skin. He sighed, finding the source of it in the usually warm garage. Ludwig marched over to his garage door and slammed it all the way down.

"That dummkopf," he grumbled.

Of course Gilbert would forget to close the garage door on his way out.

Ludwig pinched the bridge of his nose before going back to the big plastic tub sitting next to the door to the house. He pointed at it. "The two big dogs, Berlitz and Aster, get two scoops. The puppy only gets one."

Monika nodded and got to work. Ludwig watched with a befuddled look on his face. I didn't know children liked to work. He remembered how he actually hated doing normal chores when he was younger.

Monika lifted the lid to the tub and she grabbed the Styrofoam cup inside, getting one scoop. Ludwig held the door open for her as she walked in, holding it carefully so she wouldn't spill.

Blackie barked and started to race toward her.

"NEIN!" Ludwig barked.

The puppy skidded to a halt and sat still, shaking and wiggling in excitement. Monika looked at the smallest bowl sitting in the unoccupied corner in the kitchen, looking up at Ludwig for approval. He nodded and she dumped the food into the bowl.

"I'll get the others. You make sure he doesn't eat yet. He's in training still," he told her.

Monika nodded and sat next to the puppy, who was more interested in the little girl than food now. She smiled when the mutt licked her face and wiggled closer to her.

Ludwig grunted in approval and he looked to see his other dogs waiting patiently in the living room like they were supposed to. He went back out to the garage and he filled up the other dogs' bowls. Monika managed to keep Blackie at bay while he did this.

He nodded. "You can let him go now."

Monika did and all three dogs went to their respective bowls. Blackie scarfed his food down and Berlitz and Aster ate slowly.

Ludwig nodded, placing his hands on his hips. "Go get washed up. I have to go to the shop for a couple hours."

Monika nodded and went back up the stairs to her room.

Ludwig sighed, scratching his head. He looked to see Aster looking up at him with a doggie smile. She wagged her tail and sat down on his left side. Ludwig patted her head. "We're in for a ride, aren't we girl?"

Ludwig shrugged on his coat 20 minutes later as Monika slowly walked down the stairs. Ludwig's eyes widened in surprise as she walked toward him. Everything was askew, like she didn't know how to put things on.

Ludwig sighed. "Hold still."

Monika did as she was told as Ludwig unzipped her coat, taking it off to straighten out the long sleeve shirt and her scarf. He then put her gloves on and then helped her with her heavy winter shoes. He finally put the bright blue coat back on and he pulled the hood up, tying the drawstrings down at the bottom of her hood. Ludwig almost grinned, remembering when he had to do this for Laura when they were children.

"Ready?"

She nodded and he zipped up his coat. He opened the door to the garage open for her and she slowly made her way down the steps. He followed her, walking over to his car. He almost grinned when he looked at it. His car was his pride and joy. He rebuilt it when it was just a piece of scrap metal in a junk yard. His black Opel CommodoreGS.

He opened the passenger side door for Monika. She looked at him like he was crazy. He arched an eyebrow at her. She finally climbed up into the car, reaching for the seat belt. Ludwig shut the door before making his way over to his side. He got in, pushing the button on the remote to open the garage door. He waited until it was fully open before finally pulling out. He pushed the button again and waited for the garage to fully close.

He finally pulled out of his driveway, driving toward the body shop he worked at. He looked at Monika out of the corner of his eye. She was huddled in her coat, looking out the window. He turned the heat on full blast when he was sure the engine was warmed up. He saw Monika sigh in relief as the warm air hit her. Ludwig gripped the steering wheel at a stop light.

Mein Gott, I don't know what to say or do, she's almost too quiet, he thought in dismay, growing uncomfortable with the awkward feeling in the car.

He thought that she would have at least talked as much as Gilbert does. But, she didn't. Ludwig suddenly couldn't wait to get to work to cover for one of his co-workers. He needed some motherly advice.

He drove through the lakeside town of Friedrichshafen and he had never wanted to get to work as soon as he wanted to then.

They finally arrived at the body shop five minutes later; Ludwig parked behind it. He got out and let Monika out. She looked around with an innocent curiosity. Ludwig tugged on the elbow of her coat, motioning her to follow him. He looked down at her as he walked. She was basically jogging to keep up with his long strides. He shortened his strides, walking a little slower. Now she was only walking quickly.

Ludwig opened the door to the employee area of the shop, holding it open for her. Monika quickly got in out of the cold, looking around in more curiosity.

"Ludwig! Who is this herzchen?" a familiar, motherly voice called out.

Ludwig looked to see his boss coming out of her office. "This is my neicht, Monika."

The older woman walked over and squatted down to where she was eye level with Monika. She smiled warmly, causing crow's feet to show up around her bright hazel eyes. She held out her hand to the little girl. "Hallo Monika, I'm Charlotte."

Monika gave the woman a small smile before looking up at Ludwig. She almost looked pleading. Ludwig looked at her in confusion.

"Uh, Charlotte, can I talk to you alone for a moment?" Ludwig asked.

Charlotte stood up straight. "Well of course!"

Ludwig told Monika to sit on the bench that was against the wall outside Charlotte's office before he followed his boss inside. Charlotte walked over to her desk, sitting down in her old office chair. Ludwig closed the door behind him.

Charlotte was a motherly person by nature, but she could make a man beg for mercy if she wanted him to. She was a in her fifties, plump, and her dark hair with gray streaks in it was pulled back into a bun today.

"What do you need Lud?" she asked.

Charlotte was one of the only people who could call him that, since she was his boss and he trusted her.

"I need help," he admitted.

Charlotte scoffed. "Obviously! You're terrible with kids!"

Ludwig spluttered as she continued. "Ludwig, you have to get that stick out of your arsch a little if you want things to go smoothly."

She propped her elbows on her desk, pointing at him. "She kind of reminds me of you. Does she act like you?"

Ludwig shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, she's quiet. I just don't know what to say or do."

Charlotte sighed, rolling her eyes. "How did you get stuck with the little herzchen anyway?"

Ludwig rested his hands on the back of the chair in front of her desk, resting his weight on it. "My bruder was short on money and he got a job that he can't stay home for. So, naturally, he drops his daughter off to a family member."

Charlotte nodded in understanding because she knew about Gilbert's predicament. "All right, so how long do you get her?"

"Two months."

Charlotte nodded. "Just leave her with me while you work today. I'll tell you what to do later."

Ludwig nodded and walked out of the office, hoping that the only mother figure in his life could think of something.

Ludwig wiped some sweat off his brow as he walked back into the employee area a few hours later. He looked at the clock and saw that his shift was done. At least I didn't have to work a whole shift, he thought in relief.

He walked toward Charlotte's office, stopping in his tracks when he heard a little laugh from inside. He looked in the window, stiffening in surprise.

Charlotte said something and Monika was laughing some more, playing with some toy cars on the floor.

Ludwig scratched his head in puzzlement and he knocked on the door before opening it.

Charlotte looked up at him with a smile. "Lud, guess what? Monika here goes to the same Kindergarten as my enkel! They're friends! I didn't know she was that Monika!" she said, having the crow's feet show up again.

Monika looked up at Ludwig, grinning.

Ludwig scratched the back of his head. "That's…gut?"

Charlotte sighed and looked at Monika. "Leibling, can you give us a moment?"

Monika nodded, putting the toy cars back in a drawer in one of the filing cabinets by the wall and grabbing her coat, walking out. Ludwig shut the door behind her.

Charlotte pinched the bridge of her nose. "She likes dogs, horses, cars, and she likes to watch boxing with her Vati. Just let her do stuff with you and you should be fine. I can tell she's related to you, she's just as serious."

Ludwig took this information in, putting it in the back of his mind for later. He nodded. "Danke Charlotte."

Charlotte rolled her eyes. "It was for her sake, not yours."

Ludwig grinned and walked out of the office.

Ludwig took what Charlotte said to heart and he let Monika follow him around all day. He helped her unpack her suitcase and was surprised to see toy cars, horses, and a stuffed Shepherd in it. Charlotte's right.

He remembered hearing his car's engine making a strange noise on the way back home, so he went to the garage with a space heater and a stool and he set them down beside his work space.

Sure enough, Monika came in and sat on the stool and watched him as he opened the hood to his car. She leaned forward as he fiddled around with valves and some tubes in the engine. Ludwig was oddly fine with her presence now; he didn't feel as awkward as he did this morning. He coughed and sneezed into the sleeve of his sweater and kept working.

Must be coming down with something, he thought, sneezing again.

After he was done with the car, he closed it and Monika got off the stool. She attempted to pick it up and carry it back inside. She got the steps leading up to the door and he saw her bite her lip.

Ludwig unplugged the space heater and he went to the door, holding it open for her. She nodded in thanks and carried the stool up the stairs and into the house. Ludwig followed her with the space heater.  </i>Maybe this won't be so bad after all.</i>

Dear Diary,

My first day with Monika, wasn't that bad, truthfully. But I just don't get it. She's a little girl. Why doesn't she play with dolls and like little children shows or those, what are they called, Disney movies? Well, today was my first day of taking her to Kindergarten and my life took another strange turn…

Ludwig gulped as he drove up to the Kindergarten building at 7:15 am. Monika actually looked excited to be there.

"I really like my teacher," she said quietly.

Ludwig nodded, thinking that that must be a good thing as he got out and opened her door for her.

She got out, carrying her little bag with her. Ludwig shut the door to the car and he followed her to the door of the building. He opened it for her and she walked in. She walked down the hallway and walked into a room. Ludwig followed her and he looked around. Low, little tables were in a neat square in the middle of the large room. One of the many shelves had arts and crafts supplies on it, while the shelf beside it had books on mathematics and language. The other half of the room had toys and other play things, along with a rocking chair and a shelf full of books. Ludwig looked to where Monika went to see the little girl putting her coat and bag in a cubby on the wall beside the door.

Ludwig then looked at the other side of the room and his heart stopped.

A young woman was hanging up Christmas streamers, tottering on a ladder. She had her tongue poking out in concentration. Ludwig could tell she was slim, but still curvy. Her yellow dress ended just above her knees. Her light, amber colored hair was swept up in a ponytail, leaving strands on both sides of her head to frame her face. Ludwig heard a creak and he looked to see a nut coming loose on the ladder.

His body reacted before his mind did and he rushed forward right as the ladder toppled. The woman yelped and Ludwig barely managed to catch her before she could hit anything. Ludwig's mind finally caught up with him and he realized that he was holding the woman he was staring at just moments before. The woman had wrapped her arms around his neck by then as he held her. She looked at him and his mind went blank again. Her eyes were a beautiful dark gold color.

She smiled up at him. "Oh mio dio! I thought I was a goner for a second."

Ludwig's mind caught up again. An Italian?

He finally set her down, noticing that she barely came up to his shoulder.

She dusted off her dress and looked at him again. "Grazie Signore! That could have ended very badly!" she said with a smile.

Ludwig opened his mouth to say something but his vocal cords didn't want to work for some odd reason.

"Fräulein Vargas! Are you alright?"

Ludwig looked at Monika in surprise. The little girl looked really worried as she rushed to her teacher's side and tugged on her dress.

Fräulein Vargas looked at her, resting a hand on the young girl's back. "I'm alright Monika. This strong Signore saved me!"

Monika looked up at Ludwig and she grinned at him before looking back at her teacher.

"Who is this strong and handsome Signore anyway?" Fräulein Vargas asked Monika with a wink toward him.

Ludwig felt his cheeks heat up at the compliment. His throat seemed to close up as well. Ludwig felt his eyebrow start to twitch. Stop it, he shouted at himself. His body only did this when he was nervous, and now was not the time to be nervous.

"This is my Onkel Ludwig. I'm staying with him for a while," Monika explained.

Fräulein Vargas looked at Monika, then at Ludwig, then at Monika again. She laughed, which sounded like bells to Ludwig. "I can tell! You two are definitely famiglia!"

Monika grinned again and Fräulein Vargas shooed her away. "Now, go play until the others get here. I'm going to talk to your Onkel really quick."

Monika nodded and hugged Ludwig's leg quickly before walking over to the play area. Ludwig felt his cheeks heat up for a different reason this time. That was the first time Monika intentionally touched him.

"I want to say Grazie again. I really thought I was a goner," Fräulein Vargas said, cutting into his thoughts.

He nodded, rubbing the back of his neck. "N-nein, it was no trouble."

Why am I reacting like this?!

Fräulein Vargas smiled, resting a hand on Ludwig's arm. Ludwig suddenly smelled lilies and fresh bread, making his head spin. His arm started to tingle where she was touching it.

"Anyway, grazie. And Herr Beilschmidt called the school yesterday to tell us you would be bringing and picking up Monika now," she explained.

She took her hand away and smiled at him again, her hair bobbed as she clapped her hands together. "I'm glad to have met you Signore Ludwig! Remember, this class ends at 2:30!"

Ludwig nodded. She's way too enthusiastic.

He waved to Monika and finally walked back out the building, holding back a sneeze until he got into the car. He leaned his head against the steering wheel. What the hell just happened in there?

Ludwig left work at 2:15 and drove to the Kindergarten. He parked, taking a deep breath.

"Alright you putz, act like a man this time," he growled. He sneezed into his coat sleeve, getting out.

He quickly walked to the door to escape from the cold. He shivered as he walked down the hallway to where Monika was. He looked up at the clock. He was five minutes early. He peeked into the classroom to see some parents already waiting by their children's cubbies. Ludwig was caught between waiting in the hallway or with the other parents. This shouldn't be that hard of a decision, he told himself.

He peeked in again to see Fräulein Vargas with another woman in the play area with the children. She had a guitar perched on her lap, strumming the tunes to a song while the other woman led in singing. Ludwig found Monika in the group of children and she was swaying to the music. He looked at who she was sitting by and he grinned. Charlotte's enkel was sitting next to her, trying to make her sing.

At least I know who her friends are.

The song finally ended and the teachers started to herd the children toward their cubbies. Ludwig finally walked in and stood by the door, not feeling so awkward now. Monika waited patiently as the other children got their coats and bags and left with their parents. She was the last to grab her things. Ludwig looked for Fräulein Vargas out of the corner of his eye. Please don't come over here, he pleaded, thinking about how he reacted to her that morning.

Monika set her bag down, trying to pull her coat on. She struggled with one of the sleeves. Ludwig couldn't take it anymore and he just grabbed her coat, holding it up for her. She turned around and he helped her shrug it on. He zipped her up and tied the string at the bottom of her hood again.

"Sparare!"

Ludwig stiffened. He stood up straight, glancing over his shoulder to see Fräulein Vargas. She was messing with the evil ladder from this morning. The other woman was chuckling and shaking her head.

Fräulein Vargas laughed nervously.

"You're never going to fix that thing," the other woman chuckled.

Ludwig turned to leave, but something made him stop. We don't want her falling off that thing again…

He looked down at Monika and she was looking at the ladder in worry. She must be thinking the same thing.

He sighed. "Get me a wrench Fräulein."

Fräulein Vargas jumped and looked at him, realizing that they were still there. She nodded, hurrying over to a cabinet by the teachers' desks. Ludwig walked over to the verdammt ladder and he inspected the loose nut he saw that morning. He knew the ladder collapsed because of it. He just needed to tighten it.

Fräulein Vargas came back with a tiny wrench and he took it. He found the blasted nut and he tightened it up.

Fräulein Vargas placed a hand on his elbow and leaned over, inspecting what he was doing. Ludwig felt his face heat up again. Doesn't she know what personal space is?! Italians!

His left arm started to tingle as he tightened the nut with his right hand.

He finally put the wrench aside and he pushed the ladder into a collapsed position, then he opened it again. He motioned for Fräulein Vargas to step back and he climbed up. He stood up there for a few moments before climbing back down.

He suppressed a sneeze. "There, you shouldn't have to worry anymore."

"Oh, grazie Signore Ludwig!" Fräulein Vargas chirped as she hugged him.

"Ja ja, gern geschehen," he said, trying to stop his eyebrow from twitching again.

She let go of him, looking at Monika. "You're lucky to have such a handy Onkel Monika," she said, looking up at Ludwig through her bangs with a wink.

Ludwig started to feel his eyebrow twitch and his body heat up at the action.

"Well, we need to get going," he spluttered, grabbing Monika's hand and dragging her out.

"Auf Wiedersehen!" Monika said as they left.

Fräulein Vargas' bell like laugh followed them out.

What was with that woman?! We don't even know each other and she was touching my arm and winking at me like we've known each other forever! It must be an Italian thing. I'm glad I only have to go through a couple more weeks of this, then the holidays will start.

Things are starting to look up for Monika and I though. I think we are going to get along very well, as long as she's good, that is.

That arsch Gilbert needs to hurry up though. I don't know if I can take much more of Fräulein Vargas after the holidays.
